A girl was hanged today in Iran. Seven years ago, she stabbed to death a man who tried to rape her. Reyhaneh Jabbari was 19 when this former employee of Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence, assaulted her. This morning, before dawn, her life was taken away by the Islamic state once known as Persia: the chair under her feet was pulled away by the son of her rapist. Reyhaneh could have her life spared, if she would have accepted the conditions posed by the family of the man who sexually attacked her: that is, to admit that he never tried to rape — and that she cold-bloodedly planned the killing.
Reyhaneh refused: she valued her dignity and truth more than her own life.
This post is to celebrate a hero. Reyhaneh Jabbari.
